This is a QAA approved Access to HE Diploma covering 45 graded credits in various subjects (Biology, Context of Health, Psychology and Sociology) and 15 ungraded credits in Developmental units.The majority of the course contaiuns advanced level Biology which builds upon knowledge from GCSE Biology.The advanced level content in Context of Health, Psychology and Sociology require the reading, writing and reasoning skills gained from GCSE English.The units are chosen to the fit the range of the students’ preferred university course choices. Students also take developmental modules to build their skills in studying at advanced level.Examples of course content include: cell biology, biochemistry, genetics, organ systems, sexual health, lifestyle choices, concepts in mental health, health promotion, professional standards for healthcare, mathematics for healthcare.

Progression

Successful completion of the Access to HE (Health Professions) course, in conjunction with existing GCSE grades, will allow progression to a wide range of healthcare courses at university including all the nursing pathways, midwifery, paramedic science, OPD, occupational therapy and physiotherapy.It is also possible to progress to social science degrees such as psychology, criminology and social work.

Assessment

The majority of the course is assessed by written coursework and formal practical tasks. Some units are assessed by examination.

Entry Requirements

Grade 4 (C) or above in GCSE English and Mathematics (or equivalent).It is strongly recommended to have a grade 4 (C) in GCSE Biology or grade 44 in Combined Science.
