Students at the University Centre at Salford City College threw on their gowns for an evening of celebrations at the graduation ceremony earlier this month.
For the second year running The University Centre covered itself in sparkling fairy lights and shimmering fabric for a glamorous evening. With over 200 guests, friends and family watched their graduands take to the stage and become graduates.
Pendleton Sixth Form College’s flagship choir,
The Consort of Voices, wowed guests and graduands with their exceptional renditions of
Bobby Shaftoe and
Bring Him Home.
The Consort of Voices are a collection of talented performers from the college who perform regularly with a full season of shows and concerts throughout the year. The choir have also performed at the Queen’s College Chapel at The University of Cambridge.
The second half of the night was dedicated to the Student of the Year Awards. These awards highlight student successes from throughout the year. It is a time to reflect on all the hard work that has taken place and to acknowledge those achievements.
The winners of the night were…
Ruth Riley - Winner of the Access Student of the Year Award 2019
Ruth has been described as an outstanding member of the class who always engaged and participated well to class discussions and debates. She was a massive support system for her peers and always went above and beyond academically.
Ruth has excelled throughout the year, achieving outstanding grades in all units and is successfully progressing on to her chosen university to study primary education.
Finlay Wheeler - Winner of the University of Bolton Student of the Year Award 2019
Finlay completed his Certificate in Education whilst working at Worsley College as a technician. He progressed from being a student to a teacher and his empathy with the challenges faced by his learners was a credit to him. He constantly proved himself to be flexible and he led a ‘MasterChef’ initiative for local schoolchildren.
Through perseverance and determination, he worked hard to improve his academic writing, resulting in an improvement in his grades. Finlay’s greatest asset was his positive relationship with his peers and he could always be relied on to offer support.
Virag Pal - Winner of the University Centre at Salford City College Student of the Year Award 2019
Virag was a committed and dedicated student who showed diligence and discipline in her studies on the Level 4 Art Foundation. She continued throughout the course to push new boundaries, not relying on her previous skills to get her through, but adopt and employ new working methods and practices.
Often being in college before the staff, you would find Virag sat in her studio space from 7.30 usually with a blanket wrapped around her as even the heating had not been turned on at that point. She was an asset to the course and an influential student to her fellow peers.
Hannah Daly - Winner of the overall Student of the Year Award and the Pearson HNC and HND Student of the year
Hannah was the first female at the college to achieve a HNC in Building Services Engineering. She achieved this through hard work and dedication and came out with the highest possible grade of distinction. What makes her performance more remarkable is the fact that throughout her course, Hannah overcame a number of personal issues.
Hannah has now gone on to secure employment as a trainee building services engineer with Wates Construction North West.
Dominique Hamilton - University of Salford Student of the Year Award 2019
Dominique came from industry and decided to return to education after many years. She overcame her fears of re-integrating with peers and furthermore demonstrated outstanding leadership abilities from the start of the course, whilst mentoring and supporting her peers. She found that her strong work ethic was a valuable asset to her student journey.
Dominique has progressed to the final year of the degree in international events management and her overall aspiration is to pursue a career in the third sector as an event manager to give back significant impact to the community.
